This assignment is for students who have missed a participation credit and need to make up that zero credit.  A student may do this assignment only once.

Edwin Hubble’s House and Place of Work

Edwin Hubble’s family lived for a while in Kentucky, and Hubble taught (and coached basketball) across the river at New Albany High School for a year.  The NAHS Class of 1914 dedicated their yearbook to Hubble. The house where Hubble lived at this time was at 1287 Everett Avenue in Louisville.  New Albany High School was located at that time on the North-West corner of East Spring and East Sixth Streets (about 515 E. Spring St) in New Albany (seen at right; there is an apartment complex there now).

Do the following three things:

1)   Go to the Hubble House, and take a picture of yourself there (on the sidewalk, of course) — holding a sign that says “ASTRONOMER EDWIN HUBBLE WAS HERE!”  (or, if you prefer, “HUBBLE WOULD BE NOTHING WITHOUT HENRIETTA LEAVITT!”).

2)   Go to the site of the old New Albany High School (seen below as it currently appears), and take a picture of yourself there (on the sidewalk, of course) — holding a sign that says “ASTRONOMER EDWIN HUBBLE TAUGHT HERE!”  (or, if you prefer, “HOOSIER BASKETBALL COACH? EDWIN HUBBLE!”).

3)   Look up information on Edwin Hubble in Louisville and New Albany, and write a 200 word discussion of what you learned.  The discussion has to be about him in this area, not his life and work before or after he was here.

Do these three things and you can replace a day of missed Participation Grades for both Part 1 & Part 2.

What to turn in:

·         A copy of your completed Part 1 and Part 2 forms for the day of class participation that you are making up

·         Your two photos at the house and at the school location

·         Your discussion

Students who do this project for extra credit can replace the Part 1 & Part 2 grades of any day of their choosing with 100% A+ grades.  They must tell me which day they want the extra credit applied toward.  Note that this is not much extra credit.  Students who want serious extra credit should look at the options under “Major Extra Credit” under Day 1 of the class calendar.
