Ekstrom Library Astronomy

Your assignment is to visit the Ekstrom Library at the University of Louisville and to thoroughly explore their astronomy book collection.

Take a photo of yourself outside the Ekstrom library (photo #1).

Go in, and go down to Archives and Special Collections on the lower level.  There you will find the Kain Rare Books Gallery and the Pennington Cultural Heritage Gallery.  UofL has a collection of rare works of science, including Copernicus’s 1543 On the Revolutions of Heavenly Spheres, Galileo’s 1632 Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, Newton’s 1687 Principia, and others.  These books are stored and sometimes displayed here.  Take photos of yourself at both galleries (photos #2 & #3).  If you are lucky, a librarian in Archives and Special Collections might let you see one of the rare astronomy books (under close supervision) — just ask (only if you are interested, not required for this assignment).

Next, go find the section of books on astronomy (found on one of the upper floors).  Get back in among the stacks of books, where you are surrounded by astronomy books, and take a picture of yourself there (photo #4).  Make sure shelves full of astronomy books are visible in the picture.

Now browse the astronomy books.  Find six books that appeal to you.  Pull them out and take them to a table.  Take a photo of yourself with these six books in front of you (photo #5), making sure the books are clearly visible in the photo.  For each book write a long paragraph (200 words minimum for each paragraph) about why you selected that book and what about the book appealed to you.  Make sure the title of the book is at the top of the paragraph.  You will end up with six paragraphs (one for each book), totaling at least 1200 words.

Write a paragraph (200 words minimum) about what you learned at the UofL Library.

What to turn in:

·         A copy of your completed Part 1 and Part 2 forms for the day of class participation that you are making up

·         your five photos (make sure you label each one)

·         your six book paragraphs

·         your “what you learned” paragraph
