Tour of Art & Architecture Project
(this project was altered on March 19 in response to COVID-19)

In this project you will visit five different locations where astronomy is part of the art and architecture of the Louisville area.

#1) Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport

The constellation Pegasus is in the floor of the Louisville airport (600 Terminal Dr, Louisville, KY 40209).  Go see it.

Take a photo of yourself standing on this artwork.

#2) UofL Department of Physics and Astronomy Observatory Dome

There is an observatory dome visible in Louisville.  It is atop the Natural Sciences Building (215 Eastern Pkwy, Louisville, KY 40208) on the UofL Campus, as shown by the yellow arrow below.  It houses a telescope used by UofL physics and astronomy students (it is not open to the public), and is probably the only visible scientific instrument structure in Louisville.  Because it is on top of the building, it is hard to see from the ground, and so few people notice it.  But if you know where to look, you can see it from the street.  Go figure out where it can be seen from the ground, and see it.

Take a street-level photo of yourself with the UofL observatory dome in the background.

#3) Rauch Planetarium Planets

At the Rauch Planetarium (106 W Brandeis Ave, Louisville, KY 40292) the patio is sculpted to illustrate the sizes of the planets, while the brick wall that surrounds the patio represents the size of the sun.  Go see them.

Take photos of yourself standing both by the “sun” wall and in front of the “planets”.  The plaques for these can be seen through the gate.

#4) Cathedral Stars

The ceiling of the Cathedral of the Assumption (433 S 5th St, Louisville, KY 40202) is painted in stars on a deep blue background.  Go see them.  Make sure the Cathedral is open before you go (note that Cathedral’s schedule may be limited on account of COVID-19).

Take a photo of yourself beneath those stars.  The photo must include both you and the stars, so you will have to mess with the camera angle a bit.

#5) Clarksville Sundial

Across the river, in the town of Clarksville, there is a public sundial in a park, as indicated by the arrows below.  The park’s address is 430 Ohio River Scenic Byway, Clarksville, IN 47129.  Go see the sundial.

Take a photo of yourself at the sundial.

Now that you have visited these places, write an 800-word discussion of what you saw at each place, what you thought of each place (was it interesting? boring? did you know about it before this assignment? etc.), and what you learned from this project.

What to turn in:

·         Your six photos (there are two from the Rauch)

·         Your discussion
